Kinchant Dam is located in the Mackay area in the Pioneer Valley and is approximately 40 kilometers west of Mackay. The Dam was built on Sandy Creek in 1977 to provide irrigation and town water, it holds about 62 000 mega litres of water at capacity and has an average depth of 6.8 metres that covers 920 hectares when full.

Kinchant dam features a beautiful park area overlooking the dam ideal for picnics with barbecue and toilet facilities close by. It has a kiosk, licensed restaurant, and activities other than fishing such as bushwalking and mountain bike riding Camping is available on the bank of the dam and includes a boat ramp, amenities block and other accommodation which includes van sites, dorm accommodation and self contained units provided by Kinchant Waters Leisure Resort. The resort also provides rentals of some water sports equipment.

To get to Kinchant Dam, travel west from Mackay through North Eton and follow the signs to the dam, which can also be accessed via a bitumen and dirt road from Mirani, past the Pioneer Valley Golf Course.

Fish stocked here are Sooty Grunter, Sleepy Cod and since 2000, Barramundi. There are also breeding populations of Fork Tailed Catfish, Eel Tailed Catfish, Spangled Perch and Mouth Almighty.

While in the area check out finch hatton George just a short drive from kinchant Dam. Teemburra Dam also offers excellent fishing though camping is not permitted.

There are currently no boating restrictions at the dam which makes it very popular with water skiing jet skiing and fisherman.
